The Players is excited to launch the off-beat, modern comedy “Kimberly Akimbo” as the second show in The Players Backstage Series on January 31, 2013.
“Kimberly Akimbo” was written by David Lindsay-Abaire, the Pulitzer Prize winning playwright of “Rabbit Hole”. The show revolves around the life of Kimberly, who is only sixteen but has a rare illness that causes her to age five times faster than normal. The show faces the obvious questions about going through menopause in middle school with conspicuous and dark humor.
Named “comedy of the year” in 2003 by the New York Times, “Kimberly Akimbo” is a warm-hearted, foul-mouthed play about a teenager with a rare condition. Kimberly is forced to reevaluate her life while contending with a hypochondriac mother, a rarely sober father, a scam-artist aunt, her own mortality and, most terrifying of all, the possibility of first love.
“Kimberly Akimbo” is directed by Ellie Pattison with the assistance of Stage Manager Miranda Margolis. The cast includes Jennie Aldrich Walker in the title role, supported by Ross Boeringer, Kaylene McCaw, Jamie Lee Butrum and Billy Peery.
Backstage at The Players, now in its second season, adds a new dimension to The Players slate of programs. It seeks to offer edgy and compelling contemporary work in a spirit of adventure for actors and audiences alike.
All general admission tickets are $15 and are available at the box office or by calling 941 365-2494. Seating is very limited. The show contains foul language and adult humor.
