SYNOPSIS: Due to outlandish behavior following his wife’s death, retired English teacher Ben Lieberman is remanded to Happy Dale, an assisted living facility. Lieberman is a natural rebel, and he quickly upsets Happy Dale’s dull routines and staff, turning his new friends and frenemies into accomplices and confidants. Can Happy Dale provide Ben with the education he doesn’t think he wants?

SEEKING:
Ben LIEBERMAN – He/him. 74 years old, White, and Jewish – a retired English teacher and outspoken Liberal from New Jersey. LIEBERMAN is as set in his messy ways as he is outspoken, and is unafraid to ruffle anyone’s feathers. Though he’s always been strong-willed, his late wife’s death has turned LIEBERMAN into a jaded, offensive, and equal-opportunity hater (including towards himself). As the play progresses, the residents and employees of Happy Dale teach LIEBERMAN about hope, self-love, and finding common ground.

HENRY – He/him. 25 years old and Black – originally from Jamaica. An orderly at Happy Dale with a Jamaican accent and a friendly, stoner personality. HENRY values himself as an entrepreneur and is known to help residents in need (for a low price, of course). Actor also voices the offstage COP.

Don MARSHALL – He/him. 76 years old, Black, and conservative. A resident at Happy Dale and a retired police officer of 30 years who prefers to go with the flow and cares about his kids more than anything else. MARSHALL is first and foremost a neat freak – though he’s also known by staff as a good guy, and by the ladies of Happy Dale as a Ladies’ Man. When LIEBERMAN is assigned to be his roommate, the two find themselves at odds – making quite the couple.

HILDA – She/her. 56 years old and Black, originally from Haiti. A Custodian and the Head Caregiver at Happy Dale who is often mistaken for a Nurse of higher… probably because she runs the place. HILDA is no-nonsense and lives by the motto: “Happy Dale is the United Nations of Assisted Living”.

JAKE Lieberman – He/him. 39 years old, White and Jewish. LIEBERMAN’S son. Always dressed in an immaculate suit, Jake is a married attorney who is at the end of his rope with his father’s antics but loves him very deeply. Actor also voices the offstage JUDGE.

LUCY – She/her. 36 years old, any ethnicity. A therapist at Happy Dale who has been mandated by the court to help LIEBERMAN. LUCY uses humor, professionalism, and empathy to guide LIEBERMAN past his anger and into creativity and forgiveness.

BECKY – She/her. 79 years old, any ethnicity. A long-time resident at Happy Dale who doesn’t let her age or declining health stop her from having a good time. She takes a special liking to LIEBERMAN, and has a history with MARSHALL from her days in the Mahjong Club. BECKY lives by a familiar motto: “My body, my choice.” Only appears in Act Two.

All roles are open.
