Fun Home
Run dates: March 5-16, 2025

Synopsis: The Tony Award-winning musical Fun Home traces the coming-of-age of lesbian author Alison Bechdel, from her youth, to her years at Oberlin College, and finally to the present, where Alison, now grown, is struggling to write her own graphic autobiography. As Alison reflects on her past, she struggles to make sense of it, particularly her relationship with her father, Bruce, a closeted gay man and the owner of the family business — the Bechdel Funeral Home (“fun” home, as it’s known to young Alison and her brothers, John and Christian). As she watches her father’s self-loathing consume him, Alison recognizes her own experience of discovering, and ultimately embracing, her identity. As Fun Home progresses, Alison is drawn deeper and deeper into her memories, finally entering into them, desperate (but unable) to reverse her father’s self-destruction. An unforgettable and groundbreaking musical, Fun Home explores the haunting pull of memory and the power it has to alternately destroy or shape, our identity.

ALISON – Alison Bechdel in her early 40s. The narrator of this story. Now a self-aware adult, she is able to reflect insightfully on her own life and her relationship with her father before his tragic death. (Mezzo-Soprano)

MEDIUM ALISON (Early to mid-20s to play 19) – Alison Bechdel as a freshman at Oberlin college, discovering her sexuality. For an incredibly well-read, hyper-intelligent teenager, her uncertainty about who she is makes her socially awkward at times. Should be comfortable being on stage in underwear and with kissing and physical contact with character Joan. (Mezzo-Soprano)

SMALL ALISON – Alison Bechdel as a child, around 8 years old when we meet her. Precocious and opinionated. On the cusp of finding herself and forming her own views on how a girl her age should behave and dress. Seeking an actress who is confident and intelligent. (Alto)

BRUCE – Alison’s father. A high-school English teacher and funeral home director, who spends his spare time on the historic restoration of his home. A complex man with a hot temper as a result of years of repression. He can be caring and attentive to his children but is also quick to anger. Ability to play some piano a plus. (Baritone)

HELEN: Alison’s mother. Frustrated and exhausted by her tumultuous marriage. She has spent her life trying to be a good mother and wife while turning a blind eye to the irreverent activities of her husband.. Ability to play piano a plus. (Mezzo-Soprano)

JOAN – A student at Oberlin. She exudes a confident, sexual energy, with a dry sense of humor. Unlike Alison, Joan is very comfortable in her skin and openly identifies as a lesbian. Must be comfortable with harmony singing, alto lines. Should be comfortable being on stage in underwear and with kissing and physical contact with character Medium Alison. (Alto)

CHRISTIAN BECHDEL – Alison’s older brother, around 10 years old when we meet him. As the oldest of the three children he strives to be the leader, but is sometimes overshadowed by Alison’s strong personality.

JOHN BECHDEL – Alison’s younger brother, around 6 years old when we meet him. Like most boys his age, he is full of energy with a quirky imagination. Looks up to his siblings. (Treble/Boy Soprano)

ROY / PETE/ MARK / BOBBY JEREMY – Roy, a young man Bruce hires to do yard work; Pete, a mourner who visits the funeral home; Mark, a high school junior; Bobby Jeremy, the lead singer of a band in Alison’s imagination. (Tenor)

Synopsis:

TL;DR (may contain spoilers): Viola thinks her brother is dead. He thinks that she is dead. Everyone thinks that she is her brother. Everyone thinks that her brother is her. Shenanigans ensue.

Viola, separated from her twin Sebastian, dresses as a boy and works for the Duke Orsino, whom she falls in love with. Orsino is in love with the Countess Olivia, and sends Viola to court her for him, but Olivia falls for Viola instead. Sebastian arrives, causing a flood of mistaken identity, and marries Olivia. Viola then reveals she is a girl and marries Orsino.

Intro – The Lord of Misrule was the naughty spirit behind the Twelfth Night revelries in Queen Elizabeth I’s court. Under his mischievous influence, the normal order of things got turned upside down: bosses became servants, servants became bosses, women dressed as men, men dressed as women, dogs and cats living together (wait, no, that’s Ghost Busters); role playing, mask-wearing, and heavy drinking were all encouraged at the Festival of Twelfth Night. Huzzah!

The Major Characters:

Viola – Female presenting, 16 – 30’s. Her name means “will” or “purpose” – she is clever but moody and falls for the Duke in about ten seconds while dressed as a page named Cesario. Yeah. Hilarity ensues.

Duke Orsino – Male presenting – 16 – 40’s. Named in tribute to Queen Lizzie’s guest of honor at her Twelfth Night party. Emo rock star type. He thinks he loves Olivia – or, you know, himself. But that new page is looking pretty nice, too…

Olivia – Female presenting, 16 – 40’s. Lovely lady of a wealthy noble house, her name is an anagram of Viola’s, thus “purpose” becomes “whatever, dudes”. Not really into being sold off to suitors. But that new page of the Duke’s is looking pretty nice…

Sebastian – male presenting, 16 – 30’s. Twin to Viola, supposedly dead in a shipwreck but actually partying in town for most of the play. Possibly with Bill and Ted, that sort. Cool dude.

Malvolio(a) – male OR female presenting, 30s and up. Their name means “ill will”, the reverse of Viola and Olivia. In “love” with Olivia but mostly with the idea of ruling the house, the sort you really want to prank.

AND SO THEY DO:

Feste – Any gender, 25 and up. Olivia’s father hired them as the court fool (think very smart jester), but they spent years as Olivia’s best friend and teacher. Loves parties, pranks, and poetry.

Sir Toby – Male presenting, 40’s and up. Olivia’s uncle who once was an accomplished knight, loves the drink. Smart and smelly. Strong physical role.

Sir Andrew Aguecheek – Male presenting, 20’s and up. His name means “sick face”. Not the smartest of the lot, possibly inbred but a good soul, suitor to Olivia whether she knows it or not. Hangs out with Sir Toby and Maria. Giggles a lot.

Maria – Female presenting, 20’s and up. The brains of the lot. Loves them all (with a soft spot for Toby) and loves the game. She’s probably the only one of the pranksters who can write. Hates Malvolio. Strong physical role.

Soldiers, pirates, townspeople, etc.

Antonio – Male presenting, 20’s and up. Saves Sebastian from drowning. A fine seafaring fellow. Takes quite a liking to Sebastian….

Curio, Valentine, Captain, First Officer, etc. – You know, “and the rest”. Townspeople (especially children) for improv and incidental songs.

***sword fighting skills a plus for Sir Toby, Antonio, Captain, and First Officer.
