Coming in late 2026

The Sarasota Players, Sarasota’s first performing arts organization, is pleased to announce that Payne Park Auditorium will become its new home. As the company marks its 95th anniversary, it is excited to share its architectural direction and vision for transforming the venue into a premier community theater space.

After an extensive search for a permanent location, The Players secured a 30-year lease for the Payne Park Auditorium. The company is set to undertake a full-scale renovation of the building, converting it into a 200-seat performance venue that maintains the structure’s original 1960s aesthetic while introducing modern enhancements to support a dynamic theatrical experience.

“Our goal is to create a flexible, comfortable space that will accommodate plays, musicals, and community events,” said William Skaggs, CEO of The Sarasota Players. “We are excited to unveil our architectural plans and renderings, which showcase a new lobby, expanded restrooms, and so much more.”

The renderings illustrate a thoughtful transformation, ensuring that the new venue will meet the needs of both performers and audiences. Designed by Fleischman Garcia Maslowski Architecture, the adaptive space will allow for a variety of productions and events, reinforcing The Players commitment to providing engaging and accessible theater experiences for the Sarasota community.

This new home will have ample parking for its patrons. With around 250 spaces available in close proximity to the front door, this makes it extremely accessible for all. The Players will also explore a valet and other services.

Construction is anticipated to begin by fall of 2025, with the goal of opening in late 2026, just in time for the start of a new theater season. The estimated renovation cost is approximately $2.5 million, and The Players is launching a fundraising campaign to secure community support for the project.

“We want to ensure a financially stable future for The Sarasota Players while creating a theater that will serve our community for generations to come,” added Skaggs. “This vision will be realized and enhanced with the generosity and support of our community.”
