4 Tips for a Strong Audition

This coming weekend The Players holds auditions for our November production of A Tuna Christmas, the hilarious sequel to Greater Tuna by playwrights Jaston Williams, Joe Sears, and Ed Howard, and our January production of tick, tick… BOOM!, the autobiographical musical from the Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award-winning composer of Rent, Jonathan Larson. In anticipation for them, we want to ease your nerves and help you prepare. We know it isn’t always easy to step out of your comfort zone, and taking on new challenges can be intimidating, but in the words of Shakespeare, “Our doubts are traitors and cause us to miss the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.” Take the leap as it may turn out in your favor! Here are some tips to get you through your audition.

Prepare & Practice
First and foremost, come prepared. When you’re prepared, the rest falls into place more easily. What should you prepare for your audition? For The Players auditions for a musical, we ask that you perform 32 measures of song that best shows off your vocal skills (an accompanist will be provided) and wear comfortable clothing for dance auditions. For non-musicals, we encourage you to prepare a two-minute (max.) monologue and familiarize yourself with the play as the Director may request a cold reading from the script. Once you put time and thought into choosing the right piece, memorize and practice it until it you can do it in your sleep.

Be Confident
So, you’ve prepared and practiced, and you feel as ready as you’ll ever be, but still, your hands tremble and knees shake a bit before getting on that stage. Don’t panic. Embrace the nerves and transform that nervous energy into action; acting involves movement, after all. Remember, you’re doing this for a reason. Have confidence in your ability. This isn’t the time for self-doubt.

Don’t Stop
And, if after all the preparing and building yourself up, you make a mistake, keep going! Don’t throw away an entire audition because of a stumble. Try not to apologize or ask to start over; the best course of action is to power through. Mistakes happen, we’ve all been there. We understand and we’re rooting for you to give a great performance, so give it all you’ve got.

It also doesn’t hurt to have a little fun, too.
