Behind the Scenes of Ruthless!
Tech week has arrived!

Performances of The Sarasota Players’ production of Ruthless!, the award-winning Off-Broadway musical composed by Marvin Laird in collaboration with lyricist/author Joel Paley, are underway. The quirky, witty, and comedically outrageous musical follows the story of eight-year-old Tina Denmark and her boundless determination to win the part in her school musical, doing “anything” to play Pippi Longstocking, including murdering the leading lady!

So, what does it take to pull off a musical of ridiculous proportions like this one? We invite you for a little behind-the-scenes look at our cast and crew during Ruthless!’s Tech Week!

For those of you not indoctrinated into theater as a kid and unfamiliar with the term “Tech Week,” it’s the week leading up to opening night where all the technical elements are brought together for the first time, and the entirety of the show is rehearsed with all its working parts. What are the working parts? Set, costumes, props, lights, sound, and makeup. Yeah, it’s a lot. It can also be referred to as “Hell Week” for that very reason. But, without the energy of Tech Week, there may be some… hiccups, to say the least, during the actual performances in front of a live audience. Instead, run-throughs lets our cast and crew fix any bugs there may be and perfect before the show.

Though Tech Week is hectic and intense and a whole lot of work, the final product, giving our audience a memorable, and entertaining performance, makes it worth all the effort. It helps that we have fun and love what we do, too.

We hope you enjoyed a look into our world and can see the heart we put into every production. Ruthless! runs from September 27 – October 15, Wednesday through Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2 pm. See you there!
