WHAT'S TO COME - A LOOK AT THE REST OF 2023'S 94TH SEASON PRODUCTIONS!

Now that our 94th Season is in full swing, we would like to give you a peak at the phenomenal lineup we have in store for the rest of 2023!

After beginning the season with a superb production of the outrageous musical comedy, Ruthless! (take a BTS look at its tech week), our next productions scale down for quieter,thought-provoking plays, Winter Flowers and Pass Over, in an intimate Black Box setting at The Players Studio in the Rosemary District for this year’s Sidebar Series. Winter Flowersfollows the story Delphie, a woman who has been taking care of her adult younger sister, Rosie, who has the mental ability of a five-year-old, for most of her life. Delphie, now dying of stomach cancer, must provide for her sister’s future, and had decided to place them both in a nursing home. However, Rosie refuses to leave their family home, forcing Delphie to make a new plan.

The Players Studio’s Sidebar Series follows Winter Flowers up with Pass Over. Like Winter Flowers, Pass Over reflects on the fragility of the human condition. With Pass Over, The Sarasota Players reimagines Beckett’s Waiting for Godot through the eyes of two inner-city Black men. Moses and Kitch stand around on the corner – passing the time and hoping that maybe today will be different. As they dream of their promised land, a stranger wanders into their space with his own agenda and derails their plans. Emotional and lyrical, Pass Over crafts everyday profanities into poetic and humorous riffs, exposing the unquestionable human spirit of young men stuck in a cycle just looking for a way out.

In between our Sidebar Series, we celebrate the autumn season with the festive play, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, alongside our Fall Festival! In addition to the timeless tale involving the infamous Headless Horseman, the Fall Festival is a family friendly event, including food trucks, face painting, games, candy, a bounce house and more!

Before heading back to The Sarasota Player’s Main Stage, The Players Studio adds a bit of whimsical fantasy to our 94th Season with Peter and the Starcatcher. In Peter and the Starcatcher, a young orphan and his mates are shipped off from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. They know nothing of the mysterious trunk in the captain’s cabin, which contains a precious, otherworldly cargo. At sea, the boys are discovered by a precocious young girl named Molly, a Starcatcher-in-training who realizes that the trunk’s precious cargo is starstuff, a celestial substance so powerful that it must never fall into the wrong hands. When the ship is taken over by pirates – led by the fearsome Black Stache, a villain determined to claim the trunk and its treasure for his own – the journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure.

Back on the Main Stage and rounding out the holiday season is our production of A Tuna Christmas! In this hilarious sequel to Greater Tuna, it’s Christmas in the third-smallest town in Texas. Radio station news personalities Thurston Wheelis and Arles Struvie report on various Yuletide activities, including the hot competition in the annual lawn-display contest. In other news, voracious Joe Bob Lipsey’s production of A Christmas Carol is jeopardized by unpaid electric bills.
